Salute Ristorante & Bar

Overview

Walking into Salute Ristorante & Bar feels like stepping into the kind of neighborhood Italian spot people wish they had closer to home. I’ve eaten here more times than I can count, usually after a long workday when I want something comforting but still thoughtfully prepared. Located at 397A S Oyster Bay Rd, Plainview, NY 11803, United States, the restaurant balances a relaxed diner-style atmosphere with dishes that show real culinary discipline. It’s the kind of place where you notice both the warmth of the service and the consistency of the food, which isn’t something you can say about every Italian restaurant on Long Island.

From personal experience, the menu leans heavily into classic Italian-American favorites, but there’s clear attention to technique. The pasta is cooked al dente every single time, something that culinary schools and organizations like the James Beard Foundation emphasize as a baseline standard for Italian cooking. I once spoke with a server who explained that sauces are prepped in small batches throughout the day rather than all at once, which helps maintain flavor integrity and freshness. That approach lines up with what the USDA notes about food quality: smaller batch preparation often preserves texture and taste better than bulk cooking.

The menu itself is broad without being overwhelming. You’ll find staples like chicken parmigiana, veal marsala, and seafood specials that rotate based on availability. One standout for me has always been the linguine with clams, a dish that relies on timing and balance rather than heavy seasoning. According to data published by the National Fisheries Institute, properly sourced shellfish not only improves flavor but also reduces food safety risks, and Salute’s clean, briny clams suggest careful sourcing. Their pizzas, baked until the crust hits that sweet spot between crisp and chewy, are another highlight, especially when shared family-style.

What really separates this place from others in the area is how the bar integrates into the dining experience. The wine list isn’t flashy, but it’s smartly curated, featuring Italian reds that actually pair with the menu rather than compete with it. A bartender once recommended a Montepulciano d’Abruzzo with my meal, explaining why its acidity worked with tomato-based sauces. That kind of guidance reflects genuine expertise, not upselling. Research from Cornell University’s School of Hotel Administration shows that informed staff recommendations significantly improve guest satisfaction, and it’s easy to see why when the advice is that thoughtful.

Reviews from locals often mention consistency, which is something diners tend to undervalue until it’s missing. I’ve brought first-time visitors here who were skeptical because they’d seen mixed online reviews elsewhere, yet every one of them left impressed. One friend summed it up by saying the food tasted authentic Italian comfort, and another praised the service as reliably welcoming without being intrusive. Those reactions mirror my own experiences over the years.

There are limitations worth noting. On busy weekend nights, wait times can stretch longer than expected, and the dining room can get noisy. If you’re looking for an intimate, candlelit setting, this may not always fit the bill. Still, for a casual Italian restaurant that values flavor, process, and hospitality, those trade-offs are minor. The location is convenient, the portions are generous without being excessive, and the kitchen clearly respects traditional methods while adapting to modern expectations.

In an area packed with Italian eateries, Salute Ristorante & Bar stands out not because it tries to reinvent the wheel, but because it executes the fundamentals well, day after day. The combination of a dependable menu, knowledgeable staff, and a comfortable atmosphere makes it a place people return to, not just recommend.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ I had an amazing experience with Salute in Plainview! I called to place an order for a Thanksgiving luncheon with my coworkers, and Bruno could not have been more helpful. He was so friendly and patient on the phone, making the whole process incredibly easy. The food was absolutely delicious β€” the salad was fresh and flavorful, and the paninis were a huge hit. Great prices, great service, and overall a fantastic experience. Highly recommend.

Food was good. Bruno was so welcoming that it set the dinner tone immediately. Service was very good. It’s a combo pub-like with good Italian dishes. Portions are generous. Will definitely go back

I have come here for about two years, always to get my favorite Parma salad for take out. But since they opened the new nice set up next door I was curious about it, so I decide to go dine in instead of doing my usual take out, and I loved it ever since, the fried zucchini is my new favorite, the French Martini is on point, I go almost every week, very friendly staff and always attentive…. this is a very nice spot, congrats and please keep it up

We got a warm welcome and seated right away. This place used to be La Bottega. In for quick lunch. And we ordered Chicken Nuzzi panini, Steak panini with mushroom and Broccoli Rabe. Everything came out fresh and hot. Potion is good. My steak was tender but not as flavorful but the cheese and mushroom made up for it. The broccoli Rabe was great compliment to our paninis.

Very cozy with very good quality creative dishes, great service, and small live bands Friday and Sat nights. Alternate dining room for quieter dining. Moderate prices.
